Santa Rosa, CA- Three titles were on the line this past Saturday night at Cage Combat Fighting Championships (CCFC) and two new champions were crowned. CCFC returned to the Grace Pavilion at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds on May 17th to an estimated crowd of 2,000 fans for a night of Mixed Martial Arts action.
In the main event Buddy Roberts from Reno Nevada fighting out of Ken Shamrock’s Lion’s Den stunned the local Heavyweight Champion and K-1 kickboxing superstar, Rick Cheek, with a rear naked choke just 52 seconds into the first round. Roberts shot in for a take down and quickly took Cheek’s back; from there Robert’s sunk in the choke which left Cheek unconscious.
In the co-main event Jeremiah Metcalf took on Welterweight Champion James Terry. From the opening bell this match lived up to the hype, this was a war everyone expected. The first round saw Metcalf winning most of the exchanges, late in the round champion Terry landed two over-hand rights that seemed to momentarily stun the challenger. In the second round it was all Metcalf, after some exchanges they tied up against the fence where Metcalf was able to get Terry’s back and force him to the ground where he sunk in a rear naked choke to force the tap.
The first title fight of the evening Jeff Morris took on the CCFC Middleweight Champion David Mitchell. The start of the fight had Mitchell landing several leg kicks to Morris; Morris attempted several superman punches before taking Mitchell down to the canvas. Morris attempted to pass Mitchell’s guard but in the attempt to pass, Mitchell was able to latch onto a triangle choke. Morris tried to punch his way out of the choke; however Mitchell was able to transition to an arm bar forcing the tap and the win. This was Mitchell’s first defense of his title since winning the belt back in August at CCFC4 Meltdown.
